Win Streak At Two

11/6/05 Lakewood, CA  The Los Angeles Quakes stretched their winning streak to two with a 5-3 win over the visiting Tacoma Titans in front of 19,003 at Lakewood Gardens on Sunday night.  The Quakes jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in improving their overall record to 3-2.  Randy Carbone opened the scoring at 1:26 flipping a rebound past a prone Don Ferlazzo who faced 34 Quake shots.  Tom Bourgeois and veteran Bill Burden picked up the assists.  "It was great to get out to a quick start tonight.  After the tough win over Medicine Hat, I was worried we could be a little flat but this certainly got us going," said Bourgeois.  The Quakes extended the lead at 12:25 when sharp shooting David Tempkin scored assisted by Jeff Allen and Adam Bogorad.  "We're pretty tough to beat when we jump on somebody early," remarked Tempkin.  "Those two quick goals took a bit of steam out of (Tacoma) and they never really fully recovered."  The Titans did get on the scoreboard with 1:21 remaining in the period when Geoff Davis picked up the first of his three goals, knocking a rebound past John Gornick (36 shots, 33 saves).  "He (Davis) kind of got away from me in front of the net and was able to get his stick on the puck," said Gary Wells commenting on the goal.  "I should have stayed with him, but it was kind of a lucky shot".  Gornick added, "The one guy got three but I have no complaints.  If the defense continues to play like it has been, we'll be real tough to beat this year.  I did think 'Goose' (Carl Gosewisch) had a bit of a rough outing tonight, but that's to be expected.  He hasn't played a long schedule in a couple of seasons."  Gosewisch, responding to Gornick's comments, said, "I'd say Johnny hit it right on the head.  I didn't have my "sea legs" tonight and was just off of my game a touch.  I've forgotten how tough it is to play a full season, after all, this isn't some 'beer league' we're playing in."

The Quakes extended the lead to 3-1 only 1:44 into the second period when Jeremy Menkee converted a back door pass from Randy Carbone in what was one of the prettiest plays in Quake history.  On the play, Menkee left a drop pass for Carbone who faked a shot, drawing Ferlazzo out of the net.  Carbone then surprised everyone by slipping a pass to Menkee who had continued towards the net after the pass.  Menkee redirected the pass behind Ferlazzo and the red light came on sending everyone in attendance into a frenzy.  Even the normally stoic press box was buzzing after Menkee scored.  "Randy really was on his game tonight," said Menkee.  "I was worried I would miss the net with the whole 4x6 staring at me."  With Burden off the ice for tripping, Davis drew the Titans within one with an unassisted power play goal at 13:48.

The Titans were able to draw even with 11:32 remaining in the game when Davis, assisted by James Davy, was able to beat Gornick.  The Quakes were not to be denied.  With 6:23 remaining Bogorad scored, making it 4-3.  Jeff Allen picked up his second assist of the evening.  Just 1:25 later, the Quakes iced it when Tempkin scored his second of the evening, assisted by Menkee and Randy Carbone.  Carbone finished the evening with 1 goal and 2 assists, one of his strongest games in years.  "I felt good out there and just kept plugging.  The bounces went our way tonight and, fortunately, we were able to convert them.  I'm really proud of the way this team is skating," said Carbone.

The Quakes were buoyed in the third period by Nick Wood.  Wood took a high shot be Allen in the mouth during the warm up and lost 6 teeth.  Wood refused anesthesia so he could return to the game when the dental work was completed.  Burden was not pleased, "We've told that stupid (expletive) Allen to keep his shots down and he doesn't do it.  He thinks it's a big (expletive) joke to try to shoot the (expletive) puck over the glass.  He could have cost us the (expletive) game tonight."  Carbone as a bit more forgiving, "Jeff is young and exuberant.  He gets all pumped and excited before the game and can't control himself.  Sometimes it's (expletive) embarrassing."

The Quakes played without Jeff Sax who is out after undergoing eye surgery.  Sax received a vicious high stick late in the Medicine Hat game and isn't expected back until after Thanksgiving.

The biggest new of the evening was when CFO Larry Glascott showed up for his post game press conference.  Glascott really didn't have much to say other than complaining that Gosewisch is a bust and he doesn't know why Burden would sign him.  Gosewisch replied, "I've been around a long time and Glascott changes his mind like most people change their underwear."  The big news was long time partner Danny Santarpio and poodle Snuggles were no where to be found.  Instead, Glascott entered the press room with his arm around famous Phoenix hairstylist, Dr. Franc.  Franc was sporting skintight black jeans, red cowboy boots and carrying a man purse.  The entertainment industry is a buzz with rumors of a Glascott - Santarpio split.  Glascott had no opinion and directed all questions about this subject to his publicist, Hollywood insider Mallory.

The Quakes now get a rare two week break before embarking on a short two game trip to Tacoma and Fairbanks before returning home.  "We need a break now, we have a number of guys that are a bit dinged up and this will allow them to get healthy, " said GM Burden.
